Landscaping Contractor in South Elgin, IL

South Elgin is about a 15-minute drive from our shop in Elgin, close enough that it feels like our own side of town. ZGreen Landscape builds paver patios, walkways, retaining walls, fire pits, outdoor kitchens and planting beds for South Elgin homeowners on both sides of the Fox River.

A lot of what we do here is replacement. Old concrete patios, heaved walks, timber walls that have rotted out. The rest is new outdoor living space on lots that never had much done to them.

A town that grew fast

South Elgin started out as a small river village called Clintonville and took its current name in 1897. It stayed small for a long time. In 1960 the village had roughly 2,600 people. By 2000 it had about 16,000, and the 2020 census counted close to 24,000.

That growth curve tells you a lot about the backyards. Most South Elgin homes were built in the last 60 years, in waves, and each wave left something behind:

  • Houses from the 1960s and 70s often have the original poured patio, now cracked, tilted, or sinking at one corner.
  • Homes from the 80s and 90s tend to have railroad-tie or timber landscape walls that are reaching the end of their life.
  • Newer subdivisions usually came with a small builder patio and not much else, which leaves plenty of room to add a real seating area.

Lots are mostly standard suburban size. That’s a good thing for hardscape. There’s enough room for a patio, a fire pit area and planting beds without the long material hauls you get on acreage.

What the ground is doing under your yard

The village sits on both banks of the Fox River, in eastern Kane County, and the land drops toward the river from either side. Homes closer to the river corridor tend to see more slope. Farther out, the ground flattens, but flat clay ground has its own problem: water has nowhere to go and sits.

Clay is the common thread. It drains slowly, it holds water against foundations and walls, and it moves every winter as it freezes and thaws. Those old sinking slabs didn’t fail by accident. Most were poured on little or no gravel base.

When we build a patio or walkway in South Elgin, we dig out the topsoil and soft clay, install and compact a gravel base in layers, and set the surface with a deliberate pitch so rain and snowmelt drain away from the house. Walls get free-draining gravel behind them and an outlet for water. Spring in the Fox Valley is wet, and the time to plan for that is before the first stone goes down.

Anything within reach of a plow on a busy road, like the end of a driveway or a front walk, gets materials chosen to handle road salt.

Services South Elgin homeowners ask for most

Patio replacements. Tearing out an old slab and putting in pavers or brick on a real base is probably our most requested job here. We can often make the new patio larger and add a step or seat wall at the same time.

Wall rebuilds. Rotted timber walls get replaced with segmental block retaining walls that won’t rot and are built to handle wet clay behind them.

Fire features. A fire pit is the easiest way to make a patio usable in April and October as well as July.

Plantings. Our landscape design and installation work covers foundation beds, privacy screening between close neighbors, and perennials that tolerate clay.

Lighting and upkeep. We install landscape lighting for steps and paths, and handle lawn maintenance and seasonal cleanups.

South Elgin FAQs

Can you reuse my old concrete patio as a base for pavers?

Sometimes, but rarely on the older South Elgin slabs we see. If the concrete is already cracked or sinking, putting pavers on top just carries the problem forward. In most cases we remove it and build a proper gravel base.

My timber wall is leaning. Do I need to replace the whole thing?

Usually, yes. Once timbers start to rot and lean, patching one section tends to push the stress onto the next. A block wall with drainage behind it is the long-term fix. Our retaining wall cost guide covers what affects the price.

We live near the river. Does that change how you build?

It can. Lots near the river corridor tend to have more grade change and wetter soil, so we pay close attention to where water goes, how deep the base needs to be, and whether a terrace or wall makes more sense than a single large patio.

How soon can you start?

It depends on the season. Hardscape work runs roughly April through November. Getting your design done in late winter or early spring gives you the best shot at an early slot. We reply to estimate requests within 24 hours.
