Landscaping Contractor in Geneva, IL

Geneva is roughly 25 minutes south of our Elgin shop, and it’s one of the Fox Valley towns where the details of a landscape project really show. ZGreen Landscape designs and builds brick and paver walks, patios, garden and retaining walls, fire features, outdoor kitchens and plantings for Geneva homeowners, with most of the work done by our own crew.

Old Geneva and new Geneva

Geneva has been the Kane County seat since 1836, and the oldest part of town shows it. The Central Geneva Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1979 and expanded in 2017, covers about 67 acres between the Fox River, South Street, Sixth Street and West State Street. Most of its homes are two-story frame houses built between 1840 and 1900, in Greek Revival, Italianate and Classical Revival styles. There’s a separate North Geneva Historic District too.

These in-town lots are usually modest in size, with mature trees, older foundations, and front walks that have been patched more than once. Good work here is mostly about restraint. A brick walk laid in a traditional pattern. A low wall that defines a front garden without hiding the house. A backyard patio that feels like it’s been there for decades.

Away from the river and downtown, the housing gets newer and the lots get bigger and more open. Those backyards give us space for a full outdoor room: a main patio, a fire pit or fireplace, a grill area and planting to soften it all.

Materials and services that suit Geneva homes

We match the project to the house. For older homes, that usually means clay brick or tumbled pavers, natural stone accents, and planting plans with some structure to them. For newer homes, larger-format pavers and cleaner lines often look better. Either way, here’s what we build:

Larger projects that pull several of these together fall under our hardscape design and build service. We also handle spring and fall cleanups.

If you’ve walked through the Japanese garden at Fabyan Forest Preserve, along Route 31 just south of town, you’ve seen how much a few well-placed stones and layered plantings can do. We borrow that idea often on compact in-town lots: fewer, larger stones, one clear path, and plants picked for their shape as much as their flowers.

What working with us looks like

ZGreen has 25+ years behind it, over 150 projects completed and a 5.0-star rating on Google. You can read customer reviews on our testimonials page.

We keep the process short. You talk with one of our designers about the house, the yard and how you use it. We prepare a custom design and a detailed proposal. After you sign off, we plan the build, and our in-house crew handles most of it, from site prep and base to hardscape and planting.

Built for Fox Valley weather and soil

Geneva homes sit on the same heavy clay that runs through most of northern Illinois. It drains poorly, holds water after big spring rains, and expands when it freezes. That’s the reason so many old walks in town are tilted and uneven. Frost has been pushing them around for decades.

Our approach doesn’t change between a two-foot-wide garden path and a large patio. We dig out the soft material, install a gravel base in compacted layers and pitch the finished surface so water drains off it and away from the house. On lots that fall toward the river, we plan walls and steps around the grade and the way water moves across the property. Every retaining wall gets clean gravel behind it and a path for water to leave.

Older lots also mean older trees. We work around major roots rather than through them, and we sometimes adjust a walk’s route or a patio’s shape to keep a healthy tree healthy.

We can build hardscape from about April until the ground freezes in late fall. Requirements vary by municipality, and a home with historic designation may have extra review. We confirm what’s needed before we build.

Geneva FAQs

We live in the historic district. Can we replace our front walk with brick?

In many cases, yes. Brick is a natural fit for older Geneva homes. Before we finalize the design, we check what review, if any, applies to exterior work on your property so there are no surprises later.

Our old brick walk is heaving. Can it be relaid instead of replaced?

Sometimes. If the brick itself is sound, we can lift it, build a proper base underneath and relay it. If many pieces are cracked or spalled, we’ll talk through matching replacements.

Can you fit a patio and fire pit into a smaller in-town backyard?

Yes. On a compact lot, a built-in fire pit or a seat wall around the patio edge saves space compared with loose furniture. We lay it out so there’s still room to walk through the yard.

How is the price of a patio or wall figured?

By size, material, site access, excavation and extras like steps or lighting. Our paver patio and retaining wall cost pages go through the details.
