Batavia is about 25 minutes south of our shop in Elgin, and it’s a town where we regularly build retaining walls, paver patios and walks, outdoor kitchens, fire pits and planting beds. ZGreen Landscape handles design and construction together, so one team takes your project from the first sketch to the final cleanup.
Batavia, from the river out to Randall Road
Batavia grew up on the Fox River. In the late 1800s it was home to six windmill manufacturers, which is where the “Windmill City” name comes from, and you can still see restored windmills along the Batavia Riverwalk near Depot Pond. The city spreads across two counties, Kane and DuPage, and Fermilab sits just outside its limits to the east.
For landscaping purposes, Batavia splits roughly into two kinds of property.
Close to downtown and the river, on both banks, you’ll find older homes on smaller, often shaded lots. These yards have character and constraints: tight side yards for equipment, old walks and steps that have shifted, and grade that falls toward the river. Projects here tend to be detailed rather than large. A new front walk and steps in brick. A compact patio with a seat wall. A small retaining wall that finally squares off a sloped side yard.
Farther west, toward Randall Road, neighborhoods are newer and lots are more regular. Those backyards are often flat, open and underused, and they’re where we build larger outdoor living spaces with room for dining, a fire feature and planting around the edges.
Flat doesn’t mean simple, though. On a level clay lot, rainwater has no obvious place to go. A big patio dropped into the middle of that yard can act like a dam and hold water against the house. We set the patio elevation and pitch so runoff has a clear path out to the lawn.
Local conditions we build for
Batavia’s soils are mostly heavy clay, like the rest of the Fox Valley. Clay holds water after spring rain and snowmelt, then freezes and expands in winter. That cycle is what lifts and cracks sidewalks and patios that were built on too little base.
Near the river, add slope to the mix. Water coming off the street and the neighbor’s yard can run straight across a patio if nobody planned for it. On these lots we look at where water enters and leaves the property before deciding patio height, step locations and wall placement.
Here’s how that shows up in the build:
- Patios and walks sit on an excavated, compacted gravel base, not a skim of sand over clay.
- Finished surfaces are pitched so water drains away from your foundation.
- Retaining walls are backfilled with clean crushed stone that lets water out, plus reinforcement where height requires it.
- Materials near driveways and sidewalks are chosen to stand up to road salt.
Paver and wall construction here generally happens from April through November. Requirements vary by municipality, and we confirm what Batavia needs before we build.
Where Batavia projects usually start
Most calls from Batavia fall into one of a few groups.
Patio and walkway work is first. Our paver and brick installation covers patios, front walks and driveways. On older homes near downtown, clay brick or a tumbled paver usually fits best.
Then walls. Sloped yards near the river often need a retaining wall to create usable flat space or to stop soil from washing onto a walk.
Outdoor living comes next: fire pits and outdoor fireplaces and outdoor kitchens, often combined in one project under our hardscape design and build service.
And the finishing layer: landscape design and installation for beds and screening, and landscape lighting for steps, paths and trees.

Batavia homeowner FAQs
Our house is near the river and the backyard slopes. Can we still get a flat patio?
Usually. A retaining wall on the low side lets us build up a level terrace, or we can cut into the slope and hold the high side back. Which one works depends on your grade, how water moves across the yard, and how you want to get from the house to the patio.
We have an older home near downtown. Will new hardscape look out of place?
It shouldn’t. We choose materials and proportions that suit the house. Clay brick, tumbled pavers and simple lines tend to look right on older homes, while newer houses out west can carry larger-format pavers and cleaner edges.
How long does a typical patio take to build?
It depends on size, access, weather and extras like walls, steps or a fire pit. A small walkway moves faster than a multi-level patio with a kitchen. We give you a realistic schedule with the proposal, so you know when the yard will be torn up and when it won’t.
What will a new patio cost?
Size, materials, excavation and add-ons all move the number. Our paver patio cost page breaks it down, and your proposal will have exact figures.
