Landscaping Contractor in Elgin, IL

ZGreen Landscape is an Elgin company. Our shop is at 880 Mohawk Drive, so for most homeowners in town we’re somewhere between five and fifteen minutes away. From here we design and build paver patios, retaining walls, walkways, fire pits, outdoor kitchens and planting beds, and we’ve been doing it for more than 25 years.

Being local changes a few practical things. We can stop by to look at a problem spot the same week you call. Our crew isn’t burning half a morning in traffic before the first paver goes down. And when a job needs a follow-up visit, it’s a short drive, not a scheduling puzzle.

Elgin isn’t one kind of yard

Elgin covers a lot of ground, and it sits in two counties, Kane and Cook. The properties we see change a lot depending on which part of the city you’re in.

Near downtown, the housing is old. The Elgin Historic District alone takes in about 206 acres and close to 700 buildings, many dating from the late 1800s and early 1900s, and the city also has the Spring-Douglas and Elgin National Watch historic districts. Lots in these neighborhoods tend to be narrow and deep, with detached garages off the alley, old concrete walks that have heaved, and big trees whose roots run under everything. Work here is careful work. We plan around root zones, keep new walkways in scale with the house, and pick paver colors and textures that look right next to century-old brick and clapboard.

Move out from the center and you get the mid-century and later neighborhoods: ranches and split-levels on regular suburban lots, often with a small concrete slab out back that’s cracked and sinking. These are our most common patio replacements.

Then there’s the newer housing on the far west side, where many backyards still look the way the builder left them. A bare lawn, a sliding door, a two-step drop to the grass. Those yards are a clean slate, and they’re where most of our full design-build projects happen.

What we build for Elgin homeowners

If you’re not sure which of these you need, the full services page walks through everything, and the gallery shows finished work.

Clay, slopes and the Fox River valley

The Fox River runs straight through the middle of Elgin, and streets climb away from it on both sides of downtown. That means plenty of Elgin yards aren’t flat. Water runs downhill toward the house on some lots and away from it on others, and a patio or wall has to be planned around that before anything gets dug.

Under the topsoil, most of the city sits on heavy clay. Clay holds water, swells when it’s wet, and shrinks when it dries out. In winter it freezes and heaves. A patio laid on a thin bed of sand over clay will look fine for a year or two and then start to roll and separate. We dig out, lay a compacted gravel base sized for the soil and the load, and pitch the finished surface so water leaves it.

Retaining walls get the same treatment. Behind every wall we build goes clean gravel backfill and a way for water to get out, because a wall holding back saturated clay has to resist far more pressure than one holding back dry soil. Taller walls get reinforcement. For driveways and front walks, we also think about road salt, since the snowplow spray from Elgin’s busier streets ends up on the first few feet of your pavers every winter.

Our hardscape season runs roughly April through November. Plantings follow the weather.

Permits and city review

Requirements vary by municipality and by property, especially inside a historic district. We confirm what’s needed before we build.

Who you’d be hiring

ZGreen has been in business for more than 25 years and has finished over 150 projects. We hold a 5.0-star rating on Google, and you can read what customers wrote on our reviews page. Most of the work, from site prep and base installation to the last plant in the ground, is done by our own in-house crew rather than handed to a string of subcontractors.

The process is simple. You talk to one of our designers about what you want. We come back with a custom design and a detailed proposal. Then we schedule the build and do it. Estimates are free, and the estimate form promises a reply within 24 hours.

Nearby towns we also serve

Our crews work all around the Elgin shop, including South Elgin just down the river, Bartlett to the east and Algonquin to the north. The service areas page lists the rest.

Elgin landscaping questions

Can you work on a house in one of Elgin’s historic districts?

Yes. Older homes near downtown are some of our favorite projects. Exterior work in a historic district can come with extra review, so we check what applies to your property before the design is final and choose materials that suit the age of the house.

My backyard slopes down toward the house. Is that fixable?

Often, yes. Common fixes include re-grading, a low retaining wall to create a level terrace, and pitching a new patio so it sheds water away from the foundation. We look at the whole yard before recommending anything, since moving water off one spot can send it somewhere else.

How much does a paver patio cost in Elgin?

It depends on size, the paver you pick, how much excavation and base the soil needs, and extras like steps, seat walls or a fire pit. Our paver patio cost guide explains what drives the number. We give you an exact figure after the site visit.

Do you only do big design-build projects?

No. We build full backyards, but we also replace single walkways, add a fire pit to an existing patio, install lighting and handle seasonal cleanups. Elgin is home, so smaller jobs close to the shop make sense for us.
